CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING
Alternatives Submission Guidelines

Original manuscripts that fall within the aims and scope of Alternatives may be submitted directly to the editorial office (see address below). Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate. They should be prepared on a typewriter, a PC, or a word processor; double-spaced; on one side only; and on white paper of 8 1.2" x 11" or A4 size (210 x 297 mm) with a left-hand margin of 1 1/2" (40 mm). Editorial processing is significantly aided by the inclusion of computer disks.

Articles, in general, should be of 8,000 to 9,000 words in length. However, longer as well as shorter articles will be published if justified by the content of the contribution.

The first page of the typeset script should bear the title of the paper, together with the name(s) and affliation(s) of the author(s). The second page of the typescript should repeat the title, followed by the main body of the text, which should conform to the instructions given below.

All headings should be placed on the left-hand side of the text, with a double-line space above and below. Primary headings should be typed in CAPITALS; secondary headings should be typed with Initial Capital Letters; and subsidiary headings should be indicated with an initial (a), (b), and (c), etc.

Tables and illustrations should be submitted on separate sheets with their location noted in the text. The publisher will typeset the tables, but graphs and diagrams (illustrations) must be in a form suitable for reproduction without retouching. Captions for illustrations should be listed on a separate sheet.

In all matters of spelling, abbreviations, punctuation, etc., the editors intend to conform to the Chicago Manual of Style. Notes should be placed at the end of the article and their location in the text marked by superscript Arabic numerals. Do not use in-text citations, e.g., "as suggested by Smith (1978)."

Notes must be double-spaced.

The notes should include full information, as follows:

1. Journal articles (spell out journal titles completely and give the full issue number and year of publication):

J.H. Hexter, "The Loom of Language and the Fabric of Imperatives," American Historical Review 69 (Winter 1964): 945-968.

2. Books and monographs:
Jack J. Buckner, The Quest for Dreams, rev. ed. (New York: Macmillan, 1963), pp. 204-206.

3. Chapters from books:

Dorothy Grant, "The Dickens World," in George H. Chrysler and Larry Glenn, Jr., eds., The Pickwick Critics (Lexington, Mass.: Lexington Books, 1961), pp. 213-232.

Twenty offprints of each article will be supplied to the senior author.

Manuscripts will be accepted on the understanding that their content is original and that the manuscript has not been accepted for publication elsewhere. Once accepted for publication in Alternatives, copyright resides with the publisher. Manuscripts will not be returned.

Please send all manuscript submissions directly to the Alternatives editorial office: Editor, Alternatives, Department of Political Science, University of Victoria, Cornett Building, Box 3050, Victoria, B.C., Canada, V8W 3P5.  Email: rwalker@uvic.ca.
