Global Militarism and the End of Liberal Peacebuilding

The UN has not authorized any new peacekeeping missions since 2014, despite the increasing number of wars. Other peacebuilding actors, such as the EU, have turned to military training and counterterrorism. Why? How have changes in global militarism—in the organization and legitimation of war—affected or even brought about the end of liberal peacebuilding?

Considering this issue, Marta Iñiguez de Heredia explores how militarism has shaped the evolution of peacebuilding in Africa and beyond. Her work raises provocative questions about how the ideas that shaped the peacebuilding efforts of the recent past may help us to think about new approaches to current conflicts.
